EEN FABRIEK is een platform voor kunst en culturele activiteiten dat zich bezighoudt met de prominente rol die industrialisatie speelt in de regio Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. De pilotfase was in 2023-24. Hierin werden door middel van werkopdrachten, presentaties en exposities nieuwe uitwisselingsvormen worden ontwikkeld waarin kunstenaars, denkers en industriemedewerkers samenwerken in de context van het rijke lokale en regionale industriële verleden en heden van het Zeeuws-Vlaamse en Oost-Vlaamse havengebied.

In aansluiting op de pilot zullen we in 2025 en 2026 onder de nieuwe naam Fabricatie een tweejarig programma maken met ondersteuning van de Provincie Zeeland en de regeling Kunstpodium Start van het Mondriaanfonds. Naast een voortzetting van onze focus op industrialisatie en landschap zullen we ons in de programmering richten op de themagebieden elektriciteitsproductie en agrarische industrie. Hierbij zullen we onder andere kijken naar vleesproductie en diertransporten, kernenergietoerisme, het fenomeen trekker light tour en windmolencultuur. Tweedaagse evenementen op locaties verspreid door de provincie Zeeland zullen hierbij worden verbonden aan informele ontmoetingen en exposities in onze nieuwe raamgalerie in Middelburg.

Initiatief

Hoewel er in de Nederlandse cultuursector veel aandacht is voor kunst in relatie tot technologische innovatie zijn er vooralsnog nauwelijks instellingen en projecten waar gericht kritische artistieke activiteit wordt gestimuleerd in samenhang met industriële productieprocessen en industriecultuur. Dit is opmerkelijk en problematisch als we bedenken dat - ondanks de prominentie van discussies over de 'kenniseconomie' en ‘postindustrële samenleving’ - industriële productie nog steeds een vooraanstaande rol speelt in aanzienlijke delen van de Nederlandse samenleving.

Met als doel deze lacune te vullen, biedt EEN FABRIEK een programma waarin kunstenaars in de directe nabijheid van actieve industrie nieuw werk, reflecties en presentaties zullen ontwikkelen in samenwerking met experts uit lokale industrie en industrieel erfgoed. Nadruk zal hierbij liggen op artistieke praktijken die zich direct bezighouden met de maatschappelijke, esthetische en ecologische aspecten van industriële productie door middel van fysiek werk op basis van industriële machines en processen.

De activiteiten in seizoen 2023-24 werden ondersteund door de provincie Zeeland, het Cultuurfonds, het VSB-fonds, de gemeente Terneuzen en het Mondriaanfonds. Stichting Fabricatie is de penvoerder van dit project.

EEN FABRIEK ('a factory') is a new platform for art and cultural activities dealing with the prominent role of industrialisation in the Zeeuws-Vlaanderen region. The pilot phase of the project will consist of three events taking place in 2023-24. In these, work commissions, presentations and exhibitions will form a basis for new forms of exchange in which artists, thinkers and industrial workers collaborate in the context of the rich local and regional industrial past and present of the Zeeuws-Vlaanderen and East Flanders port area.

Although there is a lot of engagement in the Dutch cultural sector with art in relation to technological innovation, there are as yet hardly any institutions and projects that stimulate focused critical artistic activity in connection with industrial production processes and industrial culture. This is remarkable and problematic when we consider that - despite the prominence of discussions about the 'knowledge economy' and 'post-industrial society' - industrial production still plays a prominent role in significant parts of Dutch society.

Aiming to fill this gap, EEN FABRIEK offers a programme in which artists in close proximity to active industry will develop new work, reflections and presentations in collaboration with experts from local industry and industrial heritage. Emphasis here will be on artistic practices that directly engage with the social, aesthetic and ecological aspects of industrial production through physical work based on industrial machinery and processes.

EEN FABRIEK is an initiated by Dani Ploeger together with Eva Langerak and Berbel Lippe. The activities in season 2023-24 are supported by the Province of Zeeland, the Culture Fund, the VSB Fund, municipality of Terneuzen and the Mondriaan Fund.
