EEN FABRIEK 2: LICHAMEN EN MACHINES, 8-10 maart 2024
In het Industrieel Museum Zeeland (Sas van Gent) worden een installatie van de Taiwanees-Amerikaanse kunstenaar en filmmaker Shu Lea Cheang en een nieuwe performance van de Nederlandse kunstenaar Kitty Maria gepresenteerd, begeleid door een reflectie van Middelburgse filosoof en geschiedkundige Joyce Pijnenburg. Daarnaast wordt Cheangs speelfilm Fluidø vertoond in de bioscoop van de Funhouse Erotic Shop in het centrum van Sas van Gent. Het programma bestaat uit een rondgang waarin het publiek langs het werk wordt gevoerd aan de hand van toelichtingen op het thema “machines en lichamen”.

In het tweede weekend van EEN FABRIEK staat de relatie tussen mens en machine centraal. Het programma wordt gepresenteerd in het Industrieel Museum Zeeland in Sas van Gent, de locatiewaar in 1873 de eerste regionale en coöperatieve (suiker)fabriek werd gebouwd. In de monumentale suikerloods waarin het museum is gevestigd worden industrieel verleden en heden van de regio middels een rijke en diverse collectie van machines, procesdocumentaties en kennis aan elkaar verbonden. De machines, verwijderd uit de context van hun productiefunctie en getransformeerd tot ‘museumstukken’ worden ingezet om een collectief verhaal te vertellen over industriële ontwikkeling. Middels een nieuw werk in opdracht van kunstenaar Kitty Maria , een speciaal ontwikkelde installatie gebaseerd op de cyberpunk sci-fi film Fluidø (2017) van filmmaker en kunstenaar Shu Lea Cheang en een kritische reflectie van de historica en filosoof Joyce Pijnenburg worden interacties tussen mensen en machines onderzocht.

De installatie van Kitty Maria zal tijdens de reguliere openingstijden van het Industrieel Museum Zeeland te zien blijven in de context van de permanente tentoonstelling.

De rondgang in het Industrieel Museum Zeeland op de openingsavond (vrijdag) en de filmvertoningen in de Funhouse Erotic Shop zijn vrij toegankelijk. Voor bezoeken op de overige tijden is een regulier museumstoegangsbewijs vereist (kostenloos met Museumkaart).

In het seizoen 2023-24 worden drie weekend-lange evenementen georganiseerd in de regio Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. Het eerste evenement vindt plaats van 6-8 oktober, het tweede van 8-10 maart 2024. Het derde evenement is van 7-9 juni 2024.

EEN FABRIEK 1: LANDSCHAP EN EXTRACTIE, 6-8 oktober 2023
In mobiele expositieruimtes, op een buitenlocatie in de buurt van het industriegebied Mosselbanken bij Biervliet, worden een audiotour van Marco Evenhuis en werk van kunstenaars Penelope Cain en Martin Howse gepresenteerd. Het publiek wordt middels een audiowandeling en presentaties van de kunstenaars door het gebied en langs het werk begeleid. Op zondag 8 oktober leidt kunstenaarsduo Robbert&Frank Frank&Robbert een participatieve performance.

De locatie van het eerste evenement, de zogenaamde Mosselbanken, werd in de jaren ‘60 aan Dow Chemical verkocht en ingepolderd met het oog op toekomstige uitbreiding van de fabrieksterreinen. Sindsdien is het 100 hectare grote grondstuk echter grotendeels in dezelfde toestand gebleven. Het gebied lijkt een “waste land” dat gevangen is in een permanent tussenstadium van een industrialisatieproces dat niet tot voltooiing komt. Door de jaren heen is het gebied uit het publieke debat verdwenen en de geschiedenis van lokaal verzet tegen het inpolderingsproject, dat drastische gevolgen voor de natuur heeft gehad, is in vergetelheid geraakt.

Tijdens het evenement vormen de materiële en historische omstandigheden van de Mosselbanken het uitganspunt voor drie interventies die zullen plaatsvinden in en rond mobiele expositieruimtes aan de dijk bij de Mosselbanken in Biervliet. De Australische kunstenaar Penelope Cain ontwikkelt een nieuw werk waarin lokale mythologie een uitgangspunt vormt voor het samenbrengen van post-fossiele plasticproductie en pre-industriële natuur in het Braakmangebied. Daarnaast zal de Britse kunstenaar Martin Howse zijn langjarige project Tiny Mining re-contextualiseren in het Zeeuws-Vlaamse industrielandschap. Het project beoogt dat grondstofextractie eerst zou moeten plaatsvinden met onze eigen lichamen voordat we gaan nadenken over grootschalige ingrepen in onze leefomgeving. Deze twee artistieke interventies worden verbonden door een audiotour op de dijk naast de Mosselbanken, waarin folklorist en streektaalonderzoeker Marco Evenhuis reflecteert op extractie en landschapstransformatie in het heden en verleden van Zeeland.

Op zondag 8 oktober zal het Gentse kunstenaarsduo Robbert&Frank Frank&Robbert een interactieve performance leiden waarin het publiek wordt uitgenodigd deel te nemen aan een klein ritueel over landschap en industrialisatie.

In the 2023-24 season, three weekend-long events will be organised in the Zeeuws-Vlaanderen region. The first event will take place from 6-8 October, the second from 8-10 March 2024. The third event will be from 7-9 June 2024.

An installation by Taiwanese-American artist and filmmaker Shu Lea Cheang and a new performance by Dutch artist Kitty Maria will be presented at the Industrieel Museum Zeeland (Sas van Gent), accompanied by a reflection by Middelburg philosopher and historian Joyce Pijnenburg. In addition, Cheang's feature film Fluidø will be screened in the cinema of the Funhouse Erotic Shop in the centre of Sas van Gent. The programme consists of a tour taking the audience past the work through explanations on the theme "machines and bodies".

The second weekend of EEN FABRIEK focuses on the relationship between humans and machines. The programme is presented at the Industrieel Museum Zeeland in Sas van Gent, the location where the first regional and cooperative sugar factory was built in 1873. In the monumental sugar shed housing the museum, industrial past and present of the region are linked through a rich and diverse collection of machines, process documentation and knowledge. The machines, removed from the context of their production function and transformed into 'museum pieces', are used to tell a collective story about industrial development. Through a new commissioned work by artist Kitty Maria , a specially developed installation based on filmmaker and artist Shu Lea Cheang's cyberpunk sci-fi film Fluidø (2017) and a critical reflection by historian and philosopher Joyce Pijnenburg, interactions between humans and machines are explored.

Shu Lea Cheang's installation and an installation of performance videos by Kitty Maria can be visited on their own at the Industrieel Museum Zeeland. The team of EEN FABRIEK will be present to explain the work.

Wednesday 13 March to 28 April
Kitty Maria's installation will remain on display in the context of the permanent exhibition during the Industrieel Museum Zeeland's regular opening hours.

The tour of the Industrieel Museum Zeeland on the opening night (Friday) and the film screenings in the Funhouse Erotic Shop are free of charge. For visits at other times, a regular museum admission ticket is required (free of charge with Museumkaart).

EEN FABRIEK 1: LANDSCAPE AND EXTRACTION, 6-8 October 2023
An audio tour by Marco Evenhuis and work by artists Penelope Cain and Martin Howse will be presented in mobile exhibition spaces, at an outdoor location near the Mosselbanks industrial area near Biervliet. An audio tour and presentations by the artists will guide the public through the area and past the work. On Sunday 8 October, artist duo Robbert&Frank Frank&Robbert will lead a participatory performance.

The site of the first event, the so-called Mussel Banks, was sold to Dow Chemical in the 1960s and reclaimed with a view to future expansion of the factory sites. Since then, however, the 100-hectare plot has remained largely in the same condition. The area appears to be a "waste land" caught in a permanent intermediate stage of an industrialisation process that is not coming to completion. Over the years, the area has disappeared from public discourse and the history of local resistance to the reclamation project, which had drastic consequences for nature, has fallen into oblivion.

During the event, the material and historical conditions of the Mussel Banks are the starting point for three interventions that will take place in and around mobile exhibition spaces on the dyke near the Mussel Banks in Biervliet. Australian artist Penelope Cain is developing a new work in which local mythology is a starting point for bringing together post-fossil plastic production and pre-industrial nature in the Musselbank area. In addition, British artist Martin Howse will re-contextualise his long-standing project Tiny Mining in the Zeeuws-Vlaanderen industrial landscape. The project aims that resource extraction should first take place with our own bodies before we start thinking about large-scale interventions in our environment. These two artistic interventions are linked by an audio tour on the dike next to the Mossel Banks, in which folklorist and vernacular researcher Marco Evenhuis reflects on extraction and landscape transformation in Zeeland's past and present.

On Sunday 8 October, Ghent-based artist duo Robbert&Frank Frank&Robbert will lead an interactive performance inviting the audience to participate in a small ritual about landscape and industrialisation.
